I remember Wally well from my years as a pastor at the Lutheran Church of the Cross (now Oakridge Lutheran Church) in Vancouver from December 1975 til July 1978. I would like to extend my sincere though belated sympathy to the family. I really appreciated him as a fellow pastor and friend.
In Christ,
Pastor Horst Gutsche, Barrhead, Alberta

I am sorry to hear of Wally’s passing. Enough kind words can not be said about him. I was a child in Wally’s concregation in Selkirk for those first 6 years when he returned to Canada and then when I moved to Maple Ridge many years could not believe that I had that blessing again! Wally kept it real and was truly one of God’s most wonderful messengers.

I am truly saddened to hear of Wally’s passing. Although I knew him just over 2 years he and I became good friends. Wally had a wonderful and mischievous sense of humor that I will miss. Wally always sent me on my way with a blessing and a corny joke. Safe travels Wally. You will be missed.

Dear Karen and family,
We were so incredibly saddened to hear of your dad’s passing. He meant more to our family than you possibly will ever know. Not only did he marry Joe and I, but he was for us the “sole” teacher that put a face to religion. Before Joe and I married he encouraged me to learn about the Lutheran faith, and as a result I was baptised and then confirmed. Joe had attended all of his classes growing up. Later, our children Lukas and Izak were baptised in the Lutheran faith. He was the reason for our continued spiritual quest throughout our lives. He was our mentor.
Your dad was such a special man. Even though distance kept us apart, we kept him close to our hearts. We watched him from a distance as he suffered in earthly challenges, showing us that he was so incredibly human, subject to all the trials all of us may go through as we walk through this life.
If there is a god, then Wally was truly his messenger. He made a difference in our lives, he made us believe.
God has lost his best. He will be missed but never forgotten.
We thank God for having known him.
Always, Joe and Angie

I only know his name because his daughter Susan and I were friends during the last few years of her life working at RVH. I was very saddened by her passing. I never got to know the family well but always remembered her talking about her life when young.

Dear Karen and Brenda and all of your family;
Please let me extend my most sincere sympathy to you and yours on the passing of your father. Pastor Bergman played a huge role in the shaping of my spiritual journey and I have many fond memories of him, your mother, Susan and of course the two of you. I pray that you and yours will be comforted at this time of loss in knowing that our many prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Karen, Brenda and your families. I am saddened to hear of your dad’s passing. As a member of St Paul’s and as a neighbour we shared a lot. The memories are so many – I learned so much from your parents in the time they ministered in Maple Ridge. You are in my thoughts and prayers today and have been so often over the years. Don and I live in Vernon now so will not be attending the service today- we hope and pray that the support you receive from your family and friends will give you strength as you travel this “road” And that God will light your path and shine on you in the coming days. Hugs for all of you, Marlene
