Dear Derek’s Family,
My name is Connie Mitchell, I’m so sorry to hear of Derek’s passing.
He and I spent many a day in the Maple Ridge Hospital
together, I found him to be such kind soft spoken Man, with great love for his family,
he often spoke of all of you and of course his Wife ! I wish I could have met her.
He was very proud of her BC roots, as we spoke often of the history of her people.
We would watch old movies and cooking shows as we were both hooked up
for our infusions, but decided the old movies were the best bet, we got to hungry
seeing the great food. He must have been a great gourmet cook, he gave me lots of
tips over the years. I’ve never met a Man with such a positive out look.
I will truly miss him.
Yours Truly
Connie and John Mitchell

Nelson family,
You won’t know who I am but your father touched my life and I just wanted to let you know that I was saddened when I heard Derek had passed away. I worked at the Maple Ridge Swiss Chalet and Derek came into see me and eat about once a week. We always had such great conversations and I even offered to help him with his medical treatments if he needed me to. He touched me in a way that no other guest has. He was always upbeat, happy and positive no matter how sick he really was. I have a daughter with special needs and he never failed to ask me how my family was. I no longer work at Swiss but I always asked other servers how he was. I am glad your father’s pain is gone but just know that he was a wonderful positive influence in my life even though we had a very small connection. My thoughts are with you at this time.

Nelson family, Derek was a wonderful and treasured friend. He provided living evidence of God’s grace that is available to all of us to grow us into the people He intends for us to be. We will miss his hospitality and kindness.
