Obituary of Lelia Jane Sherrington Nutt
Lelia Nutt (1962-2023)
Near the break of dawn on a sunny July 1, 2023 Lelia left this Earth to meet her angels and join the Lord’s animal team. She has the right spunk and spirit and will certainly be a valuable contributor.
Lelia was the youngest of two children of Norma and Phil. She spent her elementary school days in Tsawwassen. Her mother’s illness at the age 4 and her death at 6 years old from the same cancer was a mighty river to cross.
Before she was out of elementary school, she found herself in private school on Vancouver island. By the time high school was over, she was in a school in New Brunswick. After some time in Halifax, she moved in with her father who was now working in New York.
Eventually she and her older brother returned to B.C.. With the support of family friends from decades ago, she managed to get on her feet and move out to Maple Ridge. She got some pets and looked after other’s horses at The Ranch.
In 2011, she bought a condo and while working began to take some courses so she could operate her own business. And she got her own horse, Glory !! In 2014, she started her dog business, Golden Ears Dog Walking. She was always a favorite with the animals, so it was an easy choice. She worked hard to build up clientele and she made some great friends along the way.
The cancer she feared reared its’ ugly head. She had to sell her horse and as the recent years passed, she had to gather all her might just to pay the bills as it became more difficult to walk the dogs. Dog sitting took on a greater role in her business.
I will always cherish the walks and talks we had on Thorn Hill, on the dyke, and in Golden Ears Park.
Many of her dog walking clients stuck with her through it all. Some were there to her very last breath in McKenney hospice. At the risk of missing some, I want to thank Heather, Nancy, Natalie, and Adine (who came here from Alberta).
I want to thank the nursing staff who were super !! I also wish to thank those who contribute to McKenney which allows those without the means a dignified passing.
Lastly, I want to thank my mother’s dear friend, Cathy Kam. Cathy has been at Lelia’s side every week out from Tsawwassen for many months. She has also been a source of strength for me. I don’t know how my sister or I would have managed those days without you by our side. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Please post your stories here. I look forward to reading them !!
In Loving Memory
