I met Bob when he was an article student at the firm then known as Andrews, Swinton, Margaugh, Austin and Williams Would have been around 1969. He was so proud of his family and the road ahead was promising. It was my first job at the young age of 19 and I was surrounded by powerhouses and type As. I was at the bottom of the rung and had to earn my stripes. Bob took me underwing helped me to understand and maneuver this strange, new world of office politics. He made a difference in my life and I am forever thankful for his honesty and friendship. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I went to law school with Bob in Saskatoon and upon graduation went to Mexico with him and our good friend Grant Watson. That experience created a special bond among the 3 amigos that will live with me forever.
He was a great guy and your loss is also great.
My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Irena,
Don and I were extremely saddened to be told of Bob’s passing. Don and Bob were first acquainted a number of years before Don and I started dating, which was in 1979. Don used Bob as his lawyer for a number of different instances thru out the years, mainly for the drawing up of the strata plan and conveyancing for Holly Lane in Pitt Meadows , and all that goes along with that. It was quite a time! We had many evenings of discussion over drinks that went well into the night. Don and I were also the first people he told that you were expecting a child. I will always remember him coming to our home in Langley and sitting on the back deck, telling us the news. What a gift for Bob and yourself!
As time sometimes does, people drift apart and do not see or talk with each other for years. I believe the last time we saw you both was at the Fort Pub, in Fort Langley. You had stopped in to have dinner and we were there with friends. We had said that we would try and get together soon. Unfortunately that did not happen.
Don and I have since moved to the Vernon area on the Okanogan Lake. We built our house here, five years ago, and I moved here last July 31.
Please accept our deepest sympathy. Condolences to his children.
We will always think of Bob as an admirable and honest friend, we could always depend on him in times of need.
Best Regards,
Don and Kathy Buchan

I was a partner with Bob in Norquist Shantz and Davies for many years and always had a very high regard for Bob both as a lawyer, a field in which he excelled, and as a partner and friend. I will not be able to attend the memorial-service but would like to express my sincerest and deepest sympathy to Bob’s family and close friends who will, I am sure, miss him terribly. It was a privilege to know him.

I am a distant cousin of Bob Shantz while he lived in the small village of Chauvin and he was raised in contact with my two brothers, Ronald and Roger Folkins. I remember him as a very mischievous young boy and my brothers were mixed up in the trouble too. After he left the village to go away to college my brothers and I were sent away to school as well and lost contact. However various bits of news drifted back home and now this sad passing is part of that news. Condolences from the distant family.

To the Shantz family,
You have lost a very good man. My husband, John Macleod and I had a small law firm in Port Coquitlam and it wasn’t long before we met both Jim Norquist and Bob Shantz. Bob was a first class man who was prepared to do what others would not, like defend Olson, upholding one of the first principles taught law students, that everyone, no matter how evil or notorious, is entitled to not only a defence but good counsel. Bob also never hesitated when I sought his help to speak with my husband about retiring from law. It would have been a heartbreaking meeting for them both I know but to Bob’s credit he handled himself admirably and resolved an extremely difficult situation without ever losing John as a friend. I asked Bob to speak at John’s funeral because I admired him so much for doing the tough work when life can be so crushingly unfair.
Peace be with you at this time,
Christine Thorson
